Sacrifices of the Military

I took off the last couple of days of knitting/spinning because my left wrist was giving me a spot of trouble. Today I am back in action in more ways then one.

The recent news of bin Laden's death has got me thinking in a big way about all the many years of effort, time, resources, and sacrifices that the military has made in order to reach their objective. This inspired me to order more supplies for spinning and knitting items for the soldiers and veterans even though I haven't gotten quite all the donations in yet. My small sacrifice for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.

I was also inspired to go out and run a mile this morning. Something I haven't done in over three years. I ran it in 13 minutes which isn't too shabby but I'd like to get it back down to where I'm running 7 minute miles again. Knitting/Spinning will help me with losing weight (40 calories an hour burned) to reach my personal weight loss goals and also to meet my goal of making at least three items per month to donate.

Your donations to help make non-toxic, handspun yarn into beautiful blankets, prayer shawls, and more to support the mission of Soldier's Angels (www.soldiersangels.com) are very much appreciated.

Knitting Spa Washcloths for Soldiers

Today I am working on knitting spa washcloths for soldiers in hospitals and nursing homes. I know from first hand experience that the washcloths that are provided in these establishments are not the most comfortable. Anything I can do to bring a bit of comfort to the soldiers.

This is an example of the washcloth you will receive at the $20 and $40 donation levels. Thank you in advance for your donation to make non-toxic, handspun yarn into beautiful blankets, prayer shawls, and more to support the mission of Soldier's Angels (www.soldiersangels.com).

Recent Donation for a Baby Blanket

The recent donation from Ms. Melody is allowing me to start work on creating a yarn for a baby blanket. Many female veterans become unwilling mothers due to sexual assault and make the decision to keep their unborn child.

My hope is that my making a baby blanket will help turn horrifying situations into ones of hope, promise, and peace. Whether or not you agree with these soldier's decisions, the important thing is that they are supported by those around them to make the bringing of the child into this world a much smoother transition. My heart goes out to these courageous women!

Thank you in advance for your donation to make non-toxic, handspun yarn into beautiful blankets and prayer shawls to support the mission of Soldier's Angels (www.soldiersangels.com).

Big Thank You to Melody!

Thank you Ms. Melody of www.barefootpath.org for being the first person to donate to the Soldier's Angels project. Ms. Melody even took it one step further by declining my offer of the handknit spa washcloth and instructed me to use the funds and time on the soldiers instead.

One thing I forgot to mention in my original blog is that donors have the choice of what color their spa washcloths will be. Here is the list of colors I have available--

White
Cream
Chocolate Brown
Spring Green
Orange
Yellow
Yellow-Green
Toffee
Light Pink
Light Blue
Smoky Blue

Also, for the persons who donate enough to receive the art yarns, I will make your art yarns in your choice of color(s). Thank you in advance for your donations!

Funds for Soldier's Angels

After several attempts to have my proposal accepted by a funding organization and having been denied, I decided to take matters into my own hands and ask for the funding through a blog.

I would like to take a moment to make something very clear going any further.  My askance for funds is NOT a "you give me something and get nothing from me in return" proposition.  No, indeed.  After reading my proposal, depending on how much you choose to donate, you WILL receive something hand crafted by me of high quality value.  If I wouldn't use it, I would not make it for you to use.  That being said, let me begin by explaining my proposition.

Soldier's Angels (www.soldiersangels.org) is a wonderful organization that provides hand crafted items to soldiers either overseas and still in combat situations or soldiers/veterans who are stateside for convalescence or are in nursing homes.  Some examples of items that have been requested are blankets for soldiers in wheelchairs, ditty bags, scarves, prayer shawls, baby blankets for pregnant soldiers, and catheter bag covers.  All of these items I am perfectly willing and able to make for the organization as they are requested.  Right now, the current need is for 55 by 55 inch square blankets for soldiers in wheelchairs.

Here is what I have contributed to this endeavor so far.  I have purchased spinning wheels, a drum carder for making batts to spin yarn, a high quality quilting sewing machine, a serger, lessons, knitting needles, crochet hooks, and materials for practice.  All in all, I have spent approximately $3399 of my own money to get myself up and running and trained in most of the fiber arts.

What I am asking for from you is contributions to purchase bulk quantities of wool and cotton roving to reduce the cost of spinning the yarn; non-toxic dyes to color the roving; bamboo, seacell, tensel, milk protein, and other nice materials to add to the roving to make it extra soft and sparkly; and material to make quilts, ditty bags, and catheter bag covers.

This is a massive undertaking and I am not planning on doing it alone.  My friend Janet, who is just as creatively skilled and creative, is going to be helping me with this project.

The amount of money I am asking for to get the show on the road is $800.  ANY contribution amount would be greatly appreciated and here is a list of of items you will receive depending on your contribution amount--

$5--A hand written card thanking you for your support of this project
$20--The above and a hand knit, 9 by 9, 100% organic washcloth that is spa quality.
$40--A hand written card thanking you for your support of this project and TWO hand knit, 9 by 9, 100% organic washcloths that are spa quality
$50--30 to 35 yards of an original, one of a kind drum carded and handspun art yarn.
$75--65 to 70 yards of an original, one of a kind drum carded and handspun art yarn
$100--135 to 140 yards of an original, one of a kind drum carded and handspun art yarn
Please contact me for donation amounts above $100

Thank you for your support of my project! As I receive feedback from the soldiers/veterans who usually thank me for the items, I will post their notes here as well!!!

Please see pics below of some of my creations!
